This is accomplished across four geographic management zones which are responsible for the operation of acute care health centres and the provision of a variety of inpatient, outpatient services including academic, tertiary, quaternary care and community based programs and services including continuing care, primary health care, public health, and mental health and addictions.

Responsibilities Reporting to the Health Services Manager, Palliative Care, the Registered Nurse will provide care and support to the patients and their families at the Cape Breton Hospice Care Centre.

The RN is responsible for the overall coordination and direction of nursing care.

The RN provides clinical leadership particularly in complex or unpredictable patient/client care settings.

The RN has the knowledge, skill and judgment needed to provide competent, evidenced based nursing practice.

The RN is accountable for the development, implementation and ongoing evaluation of the plan of care to achieve patient/client outcomes.

As a member of a collaborative care team works with other disciplines to co-ordinate care to achieve patient/family outcomes.

The RN supports the development of students and colleagues through acting as a preceptor and providing ongoing mentorship.

The RN contributes to the efficient and effective functioning of the service/unit, coordination of patient care, staffing and/or other resources as required.

The understanding of the specialty of palliative and end of life, holistic care is essential.

Qualifications Registered with the Nova Scotia College of Nursing (NSCN) Current CPR or BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) Minimum of two (2) years recent intensive Palliative Care experience If above not available, three (3) years recent acute care experience.

Palliative Care related courses from recognized institutions (ie, EPEC-O or LEAP) Completion of CNA certification in Hospice Palliative Care.

If above not available, eligibility to complete CNA certification in Hospice Palliative Care within one (1) year.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with patients/families living with the stages of advanced illness Ability to work well independently with minimal supervision, using good organizational skills Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred Successful external applicants are required to provide a criminal record check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) to People Services before starting employment and assume any associated costs as a condition of employment PLEASE NOTE: Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must clearly state such equivalencies in their cover letter, resume, or application.
